This photo is of the lava dome, which grew within the 1980 crater of Mount St. Helens. View is from the "back side" of the dome, looking north. In this view, opening (or breach) of north side of the crater is on the far side of the dome.
This series shows progressive growth of the Mount St. Helens lava dome. Views are looking south from "Yellow Rock" which is located in the crater breach about a kilometer from the dome. Photos (left to right) taken June 15, 1981, August 13, 1981, May 15, 1982, and June 13, 1983.
