Kilauea Volcano in Eruption

First days of the current Kilauea East Rift Zone eruption

[Thumbnail Image] Volcanic activity at Kilauea began more than 12 years ago on January 3, 1983 with lava eruption from a 6-km-long fissure. After a 2-day pause, intermittent low-level fissure eruptions continued for several days. January 6, 1983.

Pu'u O'o vent, June 1984

[Thumbnail Image] During 1983 and 1984 activity on Kilauea's East Rift Zone became confined to a single vent, now named Pu'u O'o. Pu'u O'o looked like this on June 2, 1984. Note the geologist next to the vent sampling volcanic gas.

Lava Fountaining Episodes

[Thumbnail Image] View of Pu'u O'o on June 2, 1986. This stage of the eruption featured brief (a day or two) periods of vigorous lava fountaining every month or so. During repose, the eruptive conduit would gradually fill with lava until it overflowed as pictured here.
